Multiple Sclerosis Rehabilitation

CIREN provides rehabilitation for patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurodegenerative conditions. The program addresses the variable and progressive nature of MS through intensive therapy designed to manage symptoms, maintain function, and support quality of life within the Neurological Restoration Program framework.

Understanding the Condition

What Is MS and Neurodegenerative Conditions Rehabilitation

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the protective sheath (myelin) covering nerve fibers, causing communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body. Symptoms vary widely and can include fatigue, difficulty walking, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, vision problems, and cognitive changes. MS is progressive but its course is unpredictable and varies significantly between individuals.

CIREN Approach

Rehabilitation at CIREN

CIREN's MS rehabilitation program combines intensive physiotherapy, occupational therapy, cognitive rehabilitation, and psychological support. The multidisciplinary team assesses each patient's specific symptoms and disease course to develop a personalized treatment plan. Therapy focuses on managing fatigue, maintaining mobility, addressing cognitive changes, and supporting emotional health.

Neurological evaluation and MS assessment
Intensive physiotherapy for mobility, strength, and balance
Occupational therapy for energy conservation and daily living
Cognitive rehabilitation for memory and processing speed
Fatigue management strategies

Eligibility Evaluation

Eligibility is determined through medical record review and pre-evaluation. CIREN's medical team assesses the type and stage of MS, current treatment regimen, and functional status. Patients must be medically stable for intensive rehabilitation.

Multiple Sclerosis in the United States

Source: National MS Society estimates

  • Nearly one million Americans are living with multiple sclerosis
  • MS is typically diagnosed between ages 20 and 50
  • Women are two to three times more likely to develop MS than men

Patient Journey

The CIREN Process

From initial medical record review to follow-up after program completion, SMC Salud coordinates every step of the CIREN journey for international patients.

1

Medical Record Review

Patients submit their medical records, imaging studies, and current functional assessments for review by CIREN's medical team. SMC Salud assists with gathering and organizing these documents.

2

Pre-Evaluation

CIREN's specialists review the submitted records to determine eligibility and develop a preliminary treatment plan. This evaluation helps ensure the program is appropriate for the patient's condition.

3

Treatment Planning

If accepted, a personalized treatment plan is developed based on the pre-evaluation. The plan outlines the program duration, therapy components, and recovery objectives.

4

Travel Coordination

SMC Salud coordinates travel logistics including visa support, accommodation arrangements, and ground transportation in Havana. Patients receive a detailed travel itinerary.

5

Rehabilitation Program

The patient attends CIREN's intensive Neurological Restoration Program in Havana. The program includes daily therapy sessions of up to 7 hours, delivered in 4-week cycles with defined recovery objectives.

6

Follow-Up

After completing the program, patients receive a discharge summary and recommendations for continued rehabilitation at home. SMC Salud remains available for follow-up coordination and support.
