Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation
CIREN provides rehabilitation for patients with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) who are living with cognitive, motor, or behavioral aftereffects. The program addresses the complex, multifaceted nature of TBI recovery through intensive multidisciplinary therapy focused on neuroplasticity and functional restoration.
What Is TBI Rehabilitation
A traumatic brain injury results from a blow, bump, or jolt to the head that disrupts normal brain function. TBI aftereffects can range from mild (brief changes in consciousness) to severe (extended periods of unconsciousness or amnesia). Common long-term effects include cognitive impairment, memory loss, difficulty concentrating, motor deficits, speech and language problems, and behavioral or emotional changes.
Rehabilitation at CIREN
CIREN's TBI rehabilitation program combines cognitive therapy, motor retraining, and psychological support within the intensive Neurological Restoration Program framework. The multidisciplinary team assesses each patient's specific deficits and develops a personalized treatment plan. Therapy may include cognitive rehabilitation exercises, robotic-assisted motor training, neurostimulation, and psychological counseling.
What the Program Includes
Eligibility Evaluation
Eligibility requires medical stability sufficient for intensive rehabilitation. CIREN's medical team reviews medical records including brain imaging, neuropsychological assessments, and functional status reports during the pre-evaluation process.
TBI in the United States
Source: CDC estimates
- Approximately 2.8 million TBI-related emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths occur annually
- TBI contributes to about 50,000 deaths per year
- Falls are the leading cause of TBI, particularly among older adults
- Many TBI survivors experience lasting effects requiring ongoing rehabilitation
The CIREN Process
From initial medical record review to follow-up after program completion, SMC Salud coordinates every step of the CIREN journey for international patients.
Medical Record Review
Patients submit their medical records, imaging studies, and current functional assessments for review by CIREN's medical team. SMC Salud assists with gathering and organizing these documents.
Pre-Evaluation
CIREN's specialists review the submitted records to determine eligibility and develop a preliminary treatment plan. This evaluation helps ensure the program is appropriate for the patient's condition.
Treatment Planning
If accepted, a personalized treatment plan is developed based on the pre-evaluation. The plan outlines the program duration, therapy components, and recovery objectives.
Travel Coordination
SMC Salud coordinates travel logistics including visa support, accommodation arrangements, and ground transportation in Havana. Patients receive a detailed travel itinerary.
Rehabilitation Program
The patient attends CIREN's intensive Neurological Restoration Program in Havana. The program includes daily therapy sessions of up to 7 hours, delivered in 4-week cycles with defined recovery objectives.
Follow-Up
After completing the program, patients receive a discharge summary and recommendations for continued rehabilitation at home. SMC Salud remains available for follow-up coordination and support.

Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation — Questions and Answers
Can CIREN cure traumatic brain injury?
No. CIREN does not claim to cure TBI. The program is a rehabilitation program designed to help patients improve cognitive, motor, and functional abilities through intensive therapy. Recovery from TBI is highly individual and outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
How soon after a TBI can someone attend CIREN's program?
Patients must be medically stable before beginning intensive rehabilitation. The timing depends on the individual's recovery progress and medical team recommendations. CIREN's pre-evaluation process helps determine when a patient is ready for the program.
What makes CIREN's TBI rehabilitation different?
CIREN's program is intensive — up to 7 hours of daily therapy in 4-week cycles — and multidisciplinary, combining multiple therapeutic disciplines in a single coordinated program. The approach is based on neuroplasticity principles and personalized to each patient's specific deficits.
