Vaxira (Racotumomab)

A therapeutic cancer vaccine targeting NeuGcGM3 ganglioside antigens found on the surface of lung tumor cells — an alternative or complementary approach to CIMAvax-EGF.

Overview

Vaxira (Racotumomab) at a glance

Vaxira (racotumomab) is another Cuban-developed immunotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer, developed by the Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM) in Havana. Like CIMAvax-EGF, it is a therapeutic cancer vaccine — given to patients who already have cancer to help their immune system fight the disease. Vaxira works on a different target than CIMAvax-EGF, making it an alternative or complementary approach for patients who may benefit from immunotherapy.

How It Works

Vaxira (racotumomab) targets NeuGcGM3 ganglioside — a type of lipid (fat) molecule found on the surface of lung tumor cells. By prompting the immune system to produce antibodies against this ganglioside, Vaxira helps the body recognize and attack tumor cells that display this marker. This mechanism is different from CIMAvax-EGF, which targets the EGF growth factor. The two therapies may be considered as alternative or complementary approaches depending on the patient's specific case.

Treatment Protocol

Vaxira is used as maintenance therapy for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after completing first-line therapy. The treatment protocol is determined individually based on the patient's diagnosis, cancer stage, prior treatments, and overall health. Your medical team will provide a personalized timeline after reviewing your records.

Conditions Treated

Clinical Evidence

Vaxira has been used in Cuba and several other countries for the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung cancer. Clinical studies have investigated its safety and immunogenicity. As with all cancer treatments, outcomes vary by individual and depend on the cancer type, stage, and the patient's overall health.

Availability

Vaxira is registered in Cuba and is available to international patients through SMC Salud's international patient services. The process begins with a medical review of your records to determine if Vaxira therapy may be appropriate for your specific case.
