Overview

Heberprot-P at a glance

Heberprot-P is a unique Cuban biotechnology product developed by the Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (CIGB) in Havana. It contains a recombinant (lab-made) human Epidermal Growth Factor (hEGF) — a protein that helps skin and tissue cells grow and heal. It is given by injection directly into the edges of complex diabetic foot ulcers (open wounds on the feet that are hard to heal), offering a treatment option for wounds that have not responded to standard care.

How It Works

Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF) is a natural protein that stimulates cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation. In diabetic foot ulcers, the normal healing process is impaired due to poor blood flow, nerve damage, and high blood sugar. Heberprot-P delivers recombinant hEGF directly to the wound bed, where it stimulates cell proliferation and tissue regeneration — promoting wound closure in ulcers that have not healed with standard wound care alone.

Treatment Protocol

Heberprot-P is injected directly into the wound edges (intralesional injection), usually three times per week for up to 8 weeks. The treatment is combined with standard wound care: cleaning, removal of dead tissue (debridement), proper dressings, pressure relief (offloading), infection treatment, and blood sugar control. The injections are administered by trained specialists in Cuban clinics, with comprehensive diabetes management alongside.

Conditions Treated

Clinical Evidence

Heberprot-P is registered in more than 26 countries and has been used to treat thousands of patients. Clinical studies have shown significant healing rates in ulcers that did not respond to standard treatment. Individual results vary based on the wound characteristics, vascular status, glycemic control, and the patient's overall health.

Availability

Heberprot-P is registered in Cuba and more than 26 other countries. It is available to international patients through SMC Salud's international patient services. The treatment requires travel to Cuba, as the injections must be administered by trained specialists in a clinical setting.
