Your Medical Journey to Cuba: A Complete Travel Guide
By the SMC Salud Medical Editorial Team
Everything international patients need to know — from visa requirements and documentation to accommodation options, payment methods, and what to expect upon arrival in Cuba.
The journey to Cuba for medical treatment begins with a consultation request through SMC Salud's secure portal, where you submit your medical history, diagnosis, and any imaging or lab results. Our medical coordinators review your case and respond within 24-48 hours with a treatment recommendation and a detailed program including timeline and costs.
For documentation, you need a valid passport. For treatments under 30 days, a tourist card suffices (available when purchasing a flight ticket or at Cuban consulates). For longer treatments, our team processes a medical visa through the treatment center. Cuban health insurance from ASISTUR is required, and the team can determine whether your existing insurance is accepted.
Upon arrival at José Martí International Airport in Havana, our multilingual team welcomes you and provides direct transport to your accommodation or medical center. Payments are made via international bank transfer (in euros, British pounds, or Canadian dollars — not US dollars) or a secure online payment gateway accepting Visa and MasterCard. Cash is not accepted. Medical interpreters support patients in Arabic, English, Turkish, French, and more throughout the stay.
